Umunna – Weak economic growth figures show Brexit is dragging economy down

UK economic growth has hit a six-month low, at 0.3% in the three months to November.

Commenting, Chuka Umunna, leading supporter of the People’s Vote campaign, said:

“The latest GDP estimates confirm that Brexit is stealing our prosperity, cutting growth, dragging us down and ultimately leading us towards a future in which we will all be worse off. And we haven’t even left the EU yet. Even the Government now admits that every form of Brexit would make our country poorer.

“However you voted in 2016, no one voted to crush opportunities for our children and grandchildren. And nobody voted for less money for the NHS, the police and our schools, or for less investment in jobs, skills and technology.

“The Government’s Brexit deal is a bad one and will leave us worse off than our current deal as members of the EU. It will guarantee that we face years or decades of rows and continued economic uncertainty as it settles nothing about our long-term relationship with Europe.

“With Westminster grid-locked the decision should now go back to the people. Only they can decide whether this deal – which breaks all the promises that were made – can go ahead.”
