Umunna – Trump’s trade war shows hard Brexit advocates “left behind by events"

Donald Trump today began a trade war with China.

Chinese imports into the US now face a 25% tax and the Chinese have retaliated with their own import levies on US goods.

Commenting, Chuka Umunna MP, leading supporter of the People’s Vote campaign, said:

“Donald Trump’s decision to launch a trade war against China is another sign of how the world has changed in fundamental and dangerous ways since the summer of 2016.

“Trump is not interested in following the rules of international trade and his America First agenda means any trade deal with him would barely be worth the paper it was written on.

“The advocates of the Government’s hard Brexit have been left behind by events. Nothing they promised in 2016 is going to be delivered and that is why so many people are demanding a People’s Vote on the final Brexit deal.”
