Responding to Theresa May's article in the Sunday Telegraph , Chuka Umunna MP, leading supporter of the People’s Vote campaign, said:
"With Theresa May's proposals facing rejection by both her own backbenchers and by Brussels, her article today is merely the latest panicked response to the momentum generated this summer by the campaign for a People's Vote on any Brexit deal.
"This week politicians will return to Westminster and we are no nearer to any deal at all but the ground has shifted under their feet since they went on holiday. All summer long the impetus has shifted across the country towards the People’s Vote campaign as the public discover the consequences of a badly botched departure from the EU that the Brextremists want to dump on the United Kingdom.
"The real betrayal of trust would be to deny the people a say on any Brexit deal which is nothing like the one they were promised. It is a betrayal of democracy for Theresa May to force a bad deal - or no deal - on Britain without giving the public the chance to have a final say in a People's Vote. More and more people from all walks of life and every corner of the country are demanding their democratic voice is heard. It is time for Westminster’s leaders to listen.”
