The EU Council has published its conclusions on the state of Brexit negotiations, expressing concern that “no substantial progress” has been made on the Northern Ireland backstop proposal, calls for “intensified efforts” on the Withdrawal Agreement and warns “Member States, Union institutions and all stakeholders to step up their work on preparedness at all levels and for all outcomes”, which has been widely interpreted to refer to contingency planning for a possible no-deal Brexit.
Commenting, Chuka Umunna MP, leading supporter of the People’s Vote campaign, said:
“Yet another Brexit deadline has now passed, but a deal is no closer to being reached. In fact, it looks as far away as ever because of the Government’s pointed refusal to engage with reality.
“The Prime Minister’s utter failure to face down the hardliners in her own Cabinet means that a destructive no-deal Brexit is now a very real possibility. That would be disastrous for our country, for jobs and for the million-plus UK citizens living in the EU, as well as EU citizens living in the UK.
“Time is fast running out but the Government is still in a shambolic state of open warfare with each other. They are making a total mess of the negotiations. That’s why we need a People’s Vote on the final Brexit deal, so that the people of this country can decide whether or not the terms on offer are good enough.”
