The Brexit Secretary, Dominic Raab, today appeared before the House of Lords EU Committee and admitted that the original deadline of October for the UK to reach a Brexit deal with the EU could slip.
He also failed to put forward any new workable solutions for the so-called ‘backstop’ to deal with the Northern Ireland border.
Commenting, Gareth Thomas MP, leading supporter of the People’s Vote campaign, said:
“It doesn’t matter who’s driving the Brexit clown-car, the wheels are still falling off. Dominic Raab has taken over from David Davis, but his admission today that the original October deadline for a deal may be missed means we’re fast running out of time to avoid total chaos.
“Raab’s startling failure to put forward any workable suggestions for how the Government plans to maintain an open border in Northern Ireland was revealing – ministers have absolutely no idea how to resolve the key contradictions created by Brexit.
“We are hurtling head-first towards the cliff edge and clueless ministers have no idea how to apply the brakes. It’s time for the people to take back control of this process through a People’s Vote on the final Brexit deal.”
