The EU Council summit has published a joint statement stating that the Brexit withdrawal agreement, including the ‘backstop’, is not open for renegotiation.
Commenting, Gareth Thomas MP, leading supporter of the People’s Vote campaign, said:
“The Prime Minister must now finally accept that, despite her efforts, the gap between the Brexit that was promised in 2016 and what’s being delivered simply cannot be bridged.
“The Brexit on offer satisfies no-one and solves nothing. But after two years of tortuous negotiations, this is what Brexit looks like. It is only right that we all have the right to decide for ourselves whether or not it’s good enough for the country.
“No matter how many trips this Prime Minister make to Brussels, there is no Brexit deal that could meet all the promises made in 2016 or be as a good as the deal we’ve already got in the EU. That is true whether it is this Prime Minister or her successor, whether it is a Conservative, a Labour or any other sort of Prime Minister.
“This deal makes no sense for Britain, and all this effort will achieve is to prolong the Brexit agony for years to come. The only way forward now is a People’s Vote.”
