The outgoing President of the European Commission, Jean Claude Juncker, has expressed his view that there should not be an extension to the Article 50 deadline.
However, the decision on any extension rests not with the Commission but with the heads of government in the European Council.
Commenting, Lord (John) Kerr, former head of the UK’s diplomatic service, and leading supporter of a People’s Vote, said:
“The Commission attempted to press the Council to reject an extension to the deadline in March and the Council rejected their advice. I would expect the same thing to happen now should Parliament reject, as I expect it will, this very bad proposal.
“What we need now is for the people to have the final say on Brexit so they, not politicians or European Commission, decide whether or not they want to proceed with this Brexit now that they know the real damage it will cause to jobs, living standards and businesses.”
