In response to the Prime Minister’s statement in the House of Commons, Jo Swinson MP, Deputy Leader of the Liberal Democrats and a leading supporter of People’s Vote, said:
“It is a democratic outrage for our political leaders to be running down the clock in this way. Today’s proceedings in the House of Commons showed contempt for the families and businesses up and down the country who will now go into the Christmas period with no certainty whatsoever about the future.
“By kicking the meaningful vote into the new year, the Prime Minister is yet again playing for time because she knows she doesn’t have support for her plan. And the Opposition really needs to get on with testing the will of the House of Commons for a General Election so that, if it fails in such an effort, it can begin addressing the single biggest challenge facing our country today.
“The Prime Minister was honest that there is no better Brexit deal on offer. Even if there was, the same problems would apply to any form of Brexit no matter how you slice and dice it. After two years of negotiations what is clear is that no deal could ever meet the promises made in 2016, and nor could it be better than the deal we’ve already got in the EU.
“That’s why the final decision should now be handed back to the people – because only they can sort this out. The only way forward is a People’s Vote.”
