European Union negotiators have floated a tentative Brexit plan to avoid a hard border on the island of Ireland, according to media reports today.
Responding, Jo Stevens MP, a leading supporter of People’s Vote, said:
“Today’s leak of the EU’s compromise position on the so-called ‘backstop’ shows just how miserable any deal Theresa May will sign will be for Britain.
“This proposal from the EU confirms the terrible choices facing the UK’s negotiators. Either the Government accepts a trade deal with Europe that keeps goods flowing freely across the Irish border and the channel and which binds the UK to future EU trade deals, or creating a hard border in Ireland and chaos at the English ports in return for the opportunity of maybe, possibly, signing a trade deal with the likes of Donald Trump.
“That is no choice at all and is a million miles away from what people were promised in 2016.
“Nobody voted for any of this, And that is why millions of people, from all parts of the country and from all walks of life are now backing a People’s Vote.”
