International Trade Secretary Liam Fox has written to Conservative MPs attacking the idea of a Brexit deal based on permanent UK membership of a customs union with the European Union.
Commenting, Jo Stevens MP, leading supporter of the People’s Vote campaign, said:
“Liam Fox’s letter shows why it is essential that any alternative Brexit deal is subject to full Parliamentary scrutiny and not simply rammed through the House of Commons to meet an arbitrary deadline. There must be no Westminster stitch-up on a decision so important to the country’s future.
“The Trade Secretary’s letter shows that a customs union deal will not only leave Britain poorer with real costs to industries and families but will also disillusion millions of leave voters who will feel it is leaving Britain as a rule taker and breaking many of the promises made in the last referendum.
“That is why we need an extension to the Brexit deadline which is long enough for Parliament to decide on what Brexit means and for the people to have the final say on any deal in a People’s Vote where the choice is between a properly negotiated and viable Brexit option and staying in the EU.”
