Responding to Sajid Javid’s speech to Conservative conference, Alex Sobel MP, leading supporter of People’s Vote, said:
“Sajid Javid’s announcement that he intends to scrap EU regulations he claims ‘burden business’ is a further sign that any Brexit under this Government will be a project by the right for the right.
“Right-wing ideologues have spent thirty years and more looking for ways to attack European regulations that protect workers’ rights, that defend safety in the workplace and that stop the worst employers discriminating on grounds of sex and race. Brexit gives them the means and the opportunity to attack workers’ rights on a broad front.
“The question any MP toying with the idea of backing any Brexit proposed by this Government has to answer is - what rights are they willing to see torn up to let Boris Johnson get Brexit over the line? If the answer is that they believe the promises made by ministers to protect rights, then they risk letting themselves be gulled by Johnson, a man who is prepared to say or do anything to get what he wants.
“There is only one basis on which MPs could and should consider voting for any Brexit proposal from Boris Johnson and that is if the final say on the plan is given back to the people in a confirmatory referendum.”
