The Shadow Foreign Secretary, Emily Thornberry, today endorsed the idea of an extension to the Article 50 process.
Commenting, Owen Smith MP, leading supporter of the People’s Vote campaign, stated:
“It is deeply irresponsible for any Government to embark on such a perilous journey as Brexit without giving the British people any idea of the eventual destination. That’s why it’s right to make sure there’s enough time for Parliament and MPs to consider all the options in detail before deciding on the best way forward for the country.
“Downing Street’s solution has been to patch together a majority by pretending the only problem with this deal is the backstop, while further obscuring any glimpse of clarity about our future relationship with the EU. Never mind the backstop, it is a bad deal – full stop.
“With an extension of Article 50 and with the flaws in all other Brexit options exposed, MPs will be able to see that a People’s Vote is the only way forward.”
Notes to Editors
At PMQs today, Emily Thornberry said the following:
“So does the minister not agree that the sensible, cautious thing to do, at this late stage, is to seek a temporary extension of Article 50 so that we have time to see whether the negotiations succeed, or if they do not, to pursue a different plan?”
