Saville-Roberts – Brecon and Radnorshire result should give snap general election plotters in Downing Street pause for thought

The Liberal Democrats have won the Brecon and Radnorshire by-election.

Commenting, Liz Saville-Roberts MP, leader of Plaid Cymru – the Party of Wales’s Westminster group and leading supporter of the People’s Vote campaign, said:

"The victory of Remain cross-party co-operation and Jane Dodds in Brecon and Radnorshire last night will give those in Downing Street plotting a snap general election pause for thought, because it shows they cannot take the public for granted.

"Barely 0.1% of the public voted for Boris Johnson to be Prime Minister and he does not have the permission of the people to inflict a destructive or No Deal Brexit - which neither he nor any of his Vote Leave colleagues, all now in Cabinet - said was even a possibility during the 2016 referendum.

"In Brecon and Radnorshire, my party - Plaid Cymru - and the Greens worked in a Remain alliance to let the Liberal Democrats front the campaign against Johnson's No Deal. I hope there will be other constituencies where parties can work together so that the people can make their voice heard and we can secure the final say referendum which is the only democratic way to solve this Brexit crisis."
