REVEALED - When Boris Johnson said “No British Conservative Government could or should sign up to” a border in the Irish Sea

The People’s Vote campaign has uncovered video of a speech Boris Johnson gave to the DUP conference in November 2018, in which he said that “No British Conservative Government could or should sign up to” a border in the Irish Sea. But now his Government is negotiating just such an arrangement with the EU, with reports suggesting any Brexit deal would include both a new customs and regulatory border between Northern Ireland and Great Britain.

This is yet more evidence that no-one can trust a word Boris Johnson says, and that the only way to solve the Brexit crisis is to give the public the final say. That’s why hundreds of thousands will be marching through London this Saturday, 19 October, demanding a People’s Vote.

In the video, Boris Johnson says:

“If we wanted to do free trade deals, if we wanted to cut tariffs... if we wanted to vary our regulation then we would have to leave Northern Ireland behind as an economic semi-colony of the EU and we would be damaging the fabric of the Union with regulatory checks and even customs controls between GB and NI – on top of those extra regulatory checks down the Irish Sea that are already envisaged in the Withdrawal Agreement.

“Now I have to tell you, no British Conservative government could or should sign up to any such arrangement.”
