Commenting on the latest leaks from Whitehall over No Deal consequences, Bridget Phillipson MP, leading supporter of the People’s Vote campaign, said:
“Every day this week two things have happened.
“Firstly, the massive cost and damage of a reckless No Deal has become clearer as a result of the publication of official and independent assessments and because reports the Government have been trying to keep secret have been leaked to journalists.
“In the last twenty-four hours we have heard the Governor of the Bank Of England outline the severe and serious economic consequences and we have seen two separate leaks from Whitehall that warn of food shortages and even of a potential breakdown of law and order.
“The second thing that has happened every day is that the base dishonesty of ministers who claim that the 2016 referendum gave them democratic permission to force No Deal on the country has been exposed for all to see.
“Most exposed of all has been Dominic Raab, the Foreign Secretary and, as First Secretary of State, the second most senior member of the Government. He started his week with a falsehood – the claim that he’d repeatedly discussed No Deal in 2016 and thus everybody knew it was coming. Today the BBC revealed that he mentioned trading on WTO terms just once during campaign interviews, and only then to dismiss it as a possibility.
“The people of Britain did not vote for No Deal and Boris Johnson does not have the democratic right to force it on us. The only fair and democratic way out of the crisis is to give the people the final say in a People’s Vote on whatever emerges from the mess.”
