The Shadow Brexit Secretary, Sir Keir Starmer, and the Deputy Leader of the Labour Party, Tom Watson, both gave speeches today confirming Labour’s commitment to put any version of Brexit to the public in a final say referendum, including a clear option to stay in the EU.
Commenting, Bridget Phillipson MP, leading supporter of the People’s Vote campaign, said:
“It is extremely significant and welcome that Labour is now wholly committed to a People’s Vote in all circumstances with a clear option to stay in the EU.
“But I and a growing number of colleagues feel there is a danger of an early general election playing into the hands of a Prime Minister who is trusted by neither members of the public nor Members of Parliament, and who seems determined to try to force a disastrous and undemocratic No Deal on the country if he can."
“After more than three years of a growing Brexit crisis, our country urgently needs a final say referendum to provide the clarity about the future that we all need, not another round of these endless negotiations.
“A general election will inevitably mean that the debates we need to have on the NHS, on education, on workers' rights and the climate crisis will be drowned out by Brexit. An election in those circumstances is not the way to settle Brexit or the big issues facing the nation.
“The only democratic and legitimate way to solve this crisis is by adopting a compromise of a confirmatory referendum in which all of us get the chance to decide - now we know so much more about what Brexit would mean - whether we want to Leave or Stay.”
