On the day (Tuesday) the House of Commons finally gets to vote on whether to accept the Prime Minister’s Brexit deal, the People’s Vote campaign is challenging the Prime Minister to answer – to the House and the people – key questions about her proposed deal.
Commenting, Phil Wilson, MP for Sedgefield, which voted in 2016 to leave the EU by 59% to 41%, and a leading supporter of the People’s Vote campaign, said:
“Today every MP finally gets to decide whether or not to accept the Government’s proposed Brexit deal. The debate in Parliament today will right be seen as one of the most important and historically-charged moments in decades.
“Every member will have to examine their conscience and must be able and willing to justify their votes and actions. And that goes right to the top.
“That is why we are challenging the Prime Minister, before the votes are cast, can she answer, truthfully, three basic, but absolutely fundamental questions about her deal:
- Is the deal she is proposing a better deal with the EU for the British economy than the deal we already have with the EU?
- Does the deal she is proposing fulfil all the promises made to the British people by the Leave campaign?
- Under her deal, in what year does she think that negotiations with the EU around Brexit will end?
“Unless the Prime Minister is able to say that the deal she is proposing is better than our current deal, that it fulfils the commitments made by the Leave campaign and that she knows when the Brexit discussions will end, then Parliament must intervene to block this deal and allow the people of the United Kingdom to have the final say by giving them a new vote.”
