The Brexit negotiations look set for further chaos and turmoil after Michel Barnier, the EU’s chief Brexit negotiator, today effectively ruled out the UK Government’s new proposal on the so-called ‘backstop’ proposal.
Mr Barnier said that the backstop could not apply to the UK as a whole, but only to Northern Ireland. He also ruled out the idea of the backstop having any kind of time-limit attached to it.
Commenting, Ian Murray MP, leading supporter of the People’s Vote campaign, said:
“Theresa May’s flimsy Brexit proposal has lasted less than 24 hours.
“As predicted, her offer of half-baked fudge on the so-called ‘backstop’ option has been wholly rejected by the EU. The Government’s inability to negotiate sensibly and in the national interest is now a matter of profound concern for every business and individual who will be impacted by a bad Brexit deal.
“The irreparable divisions in the Cabinet mean the negotiations are now collapsing into what Boris Johnson has described as a ‘meltdown’.
“With the talks in chaos, Ministers at war with one another and Parliament paralysed by internal party politics, only a People’s Vote on the final Brexit deal can sort this out.”
