Speculation has grown throughout the day that David Davis and Number 10 are locked in a fight over the so-called “backstop” on the Irish border.
Commenting, Ian Murray MP, leading supporter of the People’s Vote campaign, said:
“Observing the briefing war between David Davis and Theresa May over policy is like watching a street corner fight between two drunken bald men over a comb.
“Neither Mrs May nor Mr Davis have any long-term solution to the Irish border question and so they are duking it out over which of, to them, is the least acceptable approach.
“This is simply more evidence of what a mess the Brexit process has become. Something which will affect generations for generations is reduced to a squalid squabble between two failing politicians.
“We should not have to just accept the least worst option selected by either May or Davis. With the Government and Parliament divided and unable to make a decision in the long-term interest of the country, it should be for the people to decide. That is why we need a People’s Vote on the final Brexit deal.”
