Commenting on Sir Kim Darroch’s resignation as UK Ambassador to the USA, Ian Murray MP, member of the Foreign Affairs Committee and leading supporter of the People’s Vote campaign, said:
“The resignation of Sir Kim Darroch, plainly the victim of a coup by supporters of a hard Brexit, displays the reality of what the Brexit being advocated by Boris Johnson means.
“Having failed to commit to keep Sir Kim in post, Boris Johnson has shown his true colours. His comments have sent a dangerous signal to all our diplomats around the world and will have been music to Donald Trump’s ears.
“This episode shows that the Brexit we are hurtling towards will not be about taking back control, it will be an ongoing national humiliation. It will mean Britain bending its knee to a US president that Sir Kim was right to describe as ‘clumsy and inept’.
“If we consciously decide to isolate ourselves internationally and sever our links with our European allies, we will have little choice but to beg for crumbs off Donald Trump’s table. And we know his price for co-operation will be a lot higher than the sacking of an ambassador. The next appointment to Sir Kim’s position could well end up being politically motivated, rather than the best person for the job.
“The Brexit crisis has now become a simple matter of defending our democracy. We cannot allow a new prime minister to impose their version of Brexit on the rest of us while giving the people no say.”
