The new Foreign Secretary, Jeremy Hunt, has been revealed as previously supporting a People’s Vote on the final Brexit deal and has been challenged to confirm whether or not he still agrees with himself.
The People’s Vote campaign has unearthed video of Jeremy Hunt, then Health secretary and this week promoted to the Foreign Office, saying that Brexit is a big deal that will affect generations for generations and for that reason a People’s Vote on the final deal must stay on the table.
Leading supporter of the People’s Vote campaign, Ian Murray MP, has now written to Jeremy Hunt and challenged him to remain consistent. His letter says:
Congratulations on your appointment as Foreign Secretary. Not since Hercules has anyone been tasked with clearing up a bigger mess caused by their predecessors, so you will have your work cut out.
I am pleased to note that you have previously supported the idea of a People’s Vote on the final Brexit deal. Given that your Government plainly do not have a majority for the proposals that came out of Chequers it seems to me being consistent here might turn out to be very handy.
Can you confirm that you do intend to stand by your remarks on 28 June 2016 and that you think that a People’s Vote on the final Brexit deal is a good way out of the Brexit mess Boris Johnson and David Davis have left you with?
Ian Murray MP
