Anne Milton MP today became the latest former Conservative minister to say she is backing a People’s Vote as the only way to solve the Brexit crisis.
The MP for Guildford spoke out as Jo Johnson, the MP for Orpington and a declared supporter of a People’s Vote, resigned from the Government citing conflicts between loyalty to his brother – the Prime Minister – and the interests of the country.
In the past 24 hours, Caroline Spelman MP, a third former minister, has joined the “Rebel Alliance” of Conservative MPs prepared to put their country before their careers by voting to stop Boris Johnson’s attack on democracy.
Day after day, Downing Street’s strategy to force an undemocratic No Deal on the people is unravelling.
Speaking on Sky News, Anne Milton said:
“My feeling about a General Election is that it solves nothing at all. And although I have huge concerns about another referendum, that is the only way out of this, I have to be honest.”
In a Tweet, Jo Johnson said:
“It’s been an honour to represent Orpington for 9 years & to serve as a minister under three PMs. In recent weeks I’ve been torn between family loyalty and the national interest - it’s an unresolvable tension & time for others to take on my roles as MP & Minister. #overandout”
In comments to Bloomberg, Caroline Spelman said:
“In my constituency there is a large council estate and all the single mums there owe their jobs to the car factory…I can’t be pro No Deal when I’ve seen the predictions about what will happen to jobs, I can’t ignore it."
