Jacob Rees-Mogg today launched the Conservative European Research Group’s proposals on Northern Ireland.
Commenting, Alison McGovern MP, leading supporter of the People’s Vote campaign, said:
“Yesterday Jacob Rees-Mogg, David Davis and Boris Johnson launched an economic plan for an extreme Brexit that was ridiculed and mocked across the political spectrum.
“But nobody should be laughing at them today, because their proposals on Northern Ireland are not comical but profoundly dangerous to the stability and security of Northern Ireland and the whole of the United Kingdom.
“The Good Friday Agreement committed the UK to guaranteeing there would be no change in the status of Northern Ireland without the consent of the people there. Imposing additional border checks – whether they at the frontier, 2 miles or 20 miles from it – has no democratic legitimacy and would be done in the face of united cross-community opposition right across Northern Ireland.
“The reality is neither Theresa May nor Jacob Rees-Mogg have any answers to the Irish border question because all their proposals for Brexit that take us out of the Customs Union and the Single Market are fundamentally incompatible with the Belfast Agreement.
“There is a way out of this mess and that is to have a People’s Vote on the final Brexit deal.”
