The new Brexit Secretary, Dominic Raab, today implied that stockpiling food might be necessary in the case of a no deal Brexit.
Answering questions from the parliamentary Brexit committee, Raab stated that “[w]e will look at this issue in the round and make sure that there's adequate food supplies.”
Commenting, Caroline Lucas MP, leading supporter of the People’s Vote campaign, said:
“Dominic Raab's apparent admission that food stockpiling may be necessary in the event that we crash out of the EU with no deal will alarm my constituents and millions of other people across the country.
“In just over two years since the 2016 referendum, we’ve gone from being told ‘there is no downside to Brexit, only a significant upside’, to the Government now warning that we might not have enough food to go around.
“With the risks of no deal looking more and more serious, and with the likelihood of crashing out without a deal increasing by the day, we need a People’s Vote on the final terms of Brexit.”
