Commenting on Boris Johnson’s stated commitment to remove controls on genetic modification, Caroline Lucas MP, leading supporter of the People’s Vote campaign, said:
“Boris Johnson could not be clearer about his intention to use his plans for an extreme Brexit or even the disaster of No Deal to remove consumer and scientific protections against genetically modified foods and organisms.
“His election by fewer than 100,000 people who happened to be members of the Conservative Party gave him no mandate to pursue such policies which have zero democratic legitimacy.
“This will just be the start: for Boris Johnson is also determined to sign a trade deal with Donald Trump that will put chlorine-washed chicken and hormone-fed beef on to the supermarket shelves and into school dinners.
“Brexit has now come down to a basic question of democracy – can an elite in Westminster force this attack on our rights on us without even asking for our consent or can we force them to put their plans back to the people for the final say.”
