Commenting on the Government’s attempts to get its motion passed today, Caroline Lucas MP, leading supporter of the People’s Vote campaign, said:
“Ministers are asking for a blank cheque from Parliament by stripping out even the vague promises of the Political Declaration from the process. Backing Theresa May on this means tying the tightest of blindfolds around the eyes of both Parliament and the country.
“Indeed, the only thing of which we can be certain in the blind Brexit proposed today is that Theresa May will soon be gone and a new round of negotiations on a new political declaration will be in the hands of a new Prime Minister.
“Promises made today will not bind Theresa May’s successor in any way. Many of those already vying to succeed her have already shown they know words are cheap, commitments are made to be broken and actions carry no consequences.”
