The Attorney General’s legal advice to the Cabinet has been released to MPs.
Commenting, Caroline Lucas MP, leading supporter of the People’s Vote campaign, said:
“Keir Starmer and many others are today highlighting just how unacceptable they find the Irish backstop in the Withdrawal Agreement.
“It is absolutely crystal clear that the EU will not propose or accept any agreement which does not include a backstop for Ireland. That is the absolute bottom line for the EU in solidarity with the Irish government. So it now seems clear that there can never be a majority in Parliament for this deal. And it is a fantasy for anyone to pretend some other sort of Brexit which doesn’t include the backstop could be negotiated.
“All this shows is that what was promised can’t be delivered. Brexit campaigners promised we would be ‘taking back control’. Instead we risk being stuck in a backstop for years to come as debate about our relationship with the EU will go on forever, because all the big questions are still unanswered and successive governments will continue efforts to make sense of a deal that makes no sense for Britain.
“Instead of arguing about which fantasy Brexit some politicians in Westminster want, the public should be given the opportunity to decide in a People’s Vote: is this the kind of deal we want, or is the deal we already have in the EU better? In the end, only the people can sort this out.”
