Jeremy Corbyn has delivered a speech to the Congress of the Party of European Socialists in Lisbon, Portugal, in which he laid out Labour’s alternative plan for a ‘better’ Brexit deal.
Commenting, Caroline Lucas MP, leading supporter of the People’s Vote campaign, said:
“Now is not the moment to encourage the fantasy that there is a better Brexit available. Any sort of Brexit will make us worse off and if that happens it will be the least well off who will suffer most.
“We must be honest with the public – there isn’t a better Brexit deal on offer, and there never was. The Government’s deal breaks the promises that have been made about Brexit. But that is not because the Government is refusing to keep them – it is because they were promises that simply can’t be kept.
“Labour should be focusing on securing the Brexit deal’s defeat and moving quickly to secure a People’s Vote. Because the real choice now is whether to go ahead with a Brexit deal or stick with the deal we already have as members of the EU.
“Now we know what Brexit looks like, the public should be given the opportunity to decide in a People’s Vote – is this the kind of deal we want, or is the deal we already have in the EU better? In the end, only the people can sort this out.”
