The Assistant Chief Constable of the Police Service of Northern Ireland, Stephen Martin, has warned that dissident violent Irish Republicans are using the threat of a hard border on the island of Ireland “to garner support”.
Commenting, Caroline Lucas MP, leading supporter of the People’s Vote campaign, said:
“The Assistant Chief Constable’s warning is a chilling reminder that this is not a game for Brexiters in the Westminster play pen but something that threatens the livelihoods and safety of everyone living in Northern Ireland and beyond.
“The Government have no workable proposal to stop the creation of a hard border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.
“The Labour Party’s position would not stop a hard border either. Being a member of a Customs Union would not stop checks at the border.
“No one voted to threaten the peace process in Northern Ireland and that is why it is essential we have a People’s Vote on the final Brexit deal.”
