Lord Eric Pickles, the former Conservative Party chairman, has today become the latest senior Tory to back a People’s Vote as the only way to solve the Brexit crisis.
Speaking on Sky News, Lord Pickles said:
“If Parliament can’t sort [Brexit] out, then, I can’t believe I’m saying this, because I was absolutely opposed to a second referendum, but then a clear choice has got to be put to the public in terms of where they want to go. Do they want Mrs May’s deal, do they want to have Brexit without a period of transition, or do they want to stay in the European Union?
Commenting, Guto Bebb, the Conservative MP for Aberconwy and a leading supporter of the People’s Vote campaign said:
“I know for that some time he has been concerned that Brexit could end up dividing Britain and splitting out party. He is now the latest senior figure from the sensible centre of the Conservative Party to recognise that putting the final decision back to the people may be the only way to secure a stable majority in Parliament and a lasting settlement in the country. In speaking out now, he has once again shown he is someone with the interests of our country and our party at heart.”
