An anonymous overnight briefing from Downing Street has added to the feeling that Boris Johnson is not serious about negotiating a Brexit deal with the EU, but is instead just trying to provoke enough anger to force through a disastrous No Deal.
The memo, which directs various threats towards the EU, adds to the growing rancour and suggests a Brexit crisis that could roll on for years to come unless the public are given the final say with a People’s Vote.
Commenting, Lord John Kerr, leading supporter of the People’s Vote campaign, said:
“The briefing emerging from Downing Street has a clear objective - Boris Johnson and the hardline Vote Leave ideologues in Number 10 are trying to dial up the aggressive rhetoric in order to force through their disastrous vision of Brexit. The consequences for the country would be severe, with repercussions lasting for years.
“Loose talk of economic conflict and abandoning security cooperation with our friends and allies in Europe is deeply damaging and highly irresponsible. It points to a Brexit crisis dragging on for a decade, with rancour abroad and recession at home. Far from getting Brexit done, this just shows we’ll all get done by Boris Johnson’s Brexit.
“Instead, the best way to deliver clarity for the future is to let the public have the final say on Brexit, so we can all start to move on. That’s why huge numbers will be marching through London on October 19th, demanding a People’s Vote.”
