Cabinet Minister Esther McVey has today failed to give her backing to Theresa May’s Brexit proposal. Asked if she had confidence in the PM’s Chequers plan, Ms McVey said: “I will say that I have full confidence in the Prime Minister to deliver the Brexit that Britain voted for.”
Commenting, Chris Leslie MP, leading supporter of the People’s Vote campaign, said:
“Esther McVey’s failure to back Theresa May’s Brexit proposal is just the latest blow to the Prime Minister’s authority. Already we’ve seen a number of senior ministers resign from the Government over the Chequers car crash, there have been attempts by the Brextremists in Parliament to hole the Brexit White Paper below the waterline, whilst Labour say they’ll never vote for it. It’s a mess that satisfies nobody.
“With almost no-one happy with how Brexit is going, with a destructive no deal looking ever more likely, and with Parliament paralysed, it’s no surprise to see momentum building behind a People’s Vote on the terms of the Brexit deal.”
