Rolls Royce aerospace today announced a significant number of planned job losses, most of which will hit Derby in the East Midlands.
Earlier this week, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) announced it was shifting production from the West Midlands to Slovakia.
Commenting, Chis Leslie MP, leading supporter of the People’s Vote campaign, said:
“Twice in a week we have heard terrible news about Britain’s leading-edge manufacturers being in retreat. First JLR, now Rolls Royce.
“The hope must be that people’s jobs and futures are secured and the worst is avoided.
“On top of that we know our High Streets are in deep trouble and this week we also saw wages data that showed pay rises falling back.
“The Brexit headwinds are turning into a gale and the Government haven’t got a clue what do about it. They still have no agreed position on customs and have not come up with a credible position for even their worst-case ‘backstop’ on the question of the Irish border.
“MPs must step up to fill the void of leadership and stop ducking this, as the 2016 referendum promises are being broken daily. A People’s Vote on the final Brexit deal looks increasingly like the only solution.”
