The Prime Minister was interviewed this morning and suggested that MPs will be given a vote on whether to extend the transition period or enter the Brexit ‘backstop’.
Commenting, Phillip Lee MP, leading supporter of the People’s Vote campaign, said:
“The Prime Minister is doing her best to win colleagues round to her Brexit ‘deal’ by offering cosmetic concessions, but it’s not working. And that’s because the problem with Brexit is not Theresa May, the problem with Brexit is Brexit. The promises that were made in 2016 simply cannot be delivered.
“Asking MPs to vote to choose between two bad outcomes, either an extended transition period that means following EU rules with no say for years to come, or a ‘backstop’ that separates Northern Ireland from the rest of the UK, is no choice at all. It’s clear that none of the big Brexit questions will be solved by this withdrawal agreement, and that the Brexit on offer is much worse than the deal we’ve already got in the EU.
“It’s clear to everyone that there’s no majority amongst MPs for the Brexit deal the Government has negotiated with the EU. Parliament is gridlocked. That’s why we need to give it back to the people and let them have the final say on Brexit, through a People’s Vote.”
