Reports today suggest that the International Trade Secretary, Liam Fox, is planning to use so-called ‘Henry VIII powers’ in Parliament to water down or remove EU food standards, in order to try and strike a trade deal with Donald Trump.
Commenting, Peter Kyle MP, leading supporter of the People’s Vote campaign, said:
“Chlorine-washed chicken, hormone-injected beef and milk from infected cow udders – these are the kind of Franken-foods Liam Fox wants to allow to be imported into this country as part of his ideological obsession with a hard, destructive Brexit. But there is no mandate for him to do so, and for him to try using arcane parliamentary tools to lower food standards without proper scrutiny is outrageous.
“In the UK we are rightly proud of the high-quality, world-class food we produce. Our farmers do not want to reduce standards or to allow cheaply-produced, lower quality imports to flood the market just to appease the likes of Donald Trump. Our food production and environmental standards must not be carved up at the whims of Liam Fox.
“Nasty surprises like this is exactly why people are demanding their right to a People’s Vote at the end of the Brexit process. And as the new Roadmap to a People’s Vote shows, this outcome is looking increasingly likely.”
