King calls for fresh thinking and a People’s Vote following Article 50 extension

Former chief executive of Sainsburys Justin King, a leading supporter of the People’s Vote campaign today argued that now the immediate threat of a catastrophic no-deal had been taken off the table, political leaders need to focus on putting a workable deal to a People’s Vote.

His comments follow an interview this morning with the CBI President, John Allen in which he said: “ My personal view is if the politicians can’t get their act together, their only other option is to go back to the people.”

Justin King argues growing numbers of business leaders are now looking to politicians to support a People’s Vote as a way of resolving the current crisis.

Justin King said: “Understandably much of the comment we have heard from the business community has been about the risks of a no-deal Brexit.

“Businesses have been stockpiling raw materials, investing in software and spending on their supply chains to get ready but now that danger has been taken off the table.

“We now have at least until October to get this right and we desperately need fresh thinking and compromise from our politicians.

“Business will be looking to Westminster to agree a sensible way forward and given how far away we are from the circumstances of 2016, that way forward has to involve a People’s Vote.

“Our politicians should agree an exit deal that protects business and livelihoods and then take it back to the British People in a confirmatory referendum with remain as an option. That is the only way I can see of us finally resolving this crisis.”
