The Home Secretary Sajid Javid is to chair a meeting today to discuss the issue of migrants using small boats to reach the UK.
Commenting, Rupa Huq MP, a leading supporter of People’s Vote, said:
“The sight of migrants and refugees putting their lives on the line to reach the UK is a reminder of the desperate situation faced by so many people around the world who dream of making a better life for themselves and their families. But the plight of those people from outside the EU arriving on British beaches can only be solved by closer cooperation between EU countries in areas such as security and international relief, both within the EU and on a global level.
“Sajid Javid is right that there are no easy answers to this issue, but cutting ourselves off from our partners across the Channel is not one of them and posturing by potential contenders for the Conservative leadership is no way to approach this sensitive issue.
“The biggest challenges facing the U.K. including immigration and our relationship with the EU have been effectively shelved by Brexit. Trying to tackle them after we’ve left, when the UK will be in an even weaker negotiating position than now, will solve nothing.
“That is why it is only right that the public have a say on whether the Government’s plan for Brexit is better than the close ties and cooperation we already have inside the EU. A People’s Vote is the only way forward.”
