Commenting on the threat to remove the whip from Conservative MPs who vote to block No Deal, Lord Heseltine CH PC, former deputy Prime Minister and leading supporter of the People’s Vote campaign, said:
“No one can seriously doubt that the House of Commons is facing its most important peacetime decision for fifty years. For opposition MPs the decisions are easy. They will oppose, however qualified their opposition. If a Labour government had behaved as this government, the Tory party in Parliament would have stormed the political barricades in its reaction to the outrage of our constitution
“But the Conservatives are not in opposition. I know something of the agony one faces if one defies one’s party and carries that defiance into the division lobby. It is the agony of wrenched loyalties, of stretched friendships and of a threatened career. Few have the stomach for it. But those few are the stuff of history. They are the ones that this week will follow their instinct about what is right for our country and vote to assert the authority of Parliament.
“For the rest of their lives they will remember this week with pride.”
