Commenting on the talks between Leo Varadkar and Boris Johnson, (Lord) Peter Hain, former Northern Ireland Secretary and leading supporter of a People’s Vote, said:“Boris Johnson has repeatedly claimed he’s compromised but, in reality, he’s only compromised with the ERG and the DUP. It’s no wonder the Irish government have refused to accept his proposal as the basis for a deal.
“Johnson’s proposal would leave Northern Ireland in the worst of all worlds: forced to choose between destroying frictionless trade East – West or North – South. Either would represent a serious blow to prospects for continued progress via the peace process. Such a Brexit would magnify and widen the current crisis and lead to years of bitter and increasingly dangerous dispute.
“Time may be running out for Johnson, but he cannot be allowed to force a vicious Brexit on us to meet his self-imposed deadline.
“Ultimately whatever emerges as his Brexit plan has to be tested in a final say referendum. That is the only fair and democratic outcome. And that is why, on Saturday 19 October, vast numbers of people will gather in London for one of the biggest political demonstrations Britain has ever seen."
