Commenting on the meetings Boris Johnson has had this week with Angela Merkel and Emmanuel Macron Former Northern Ireland Secretary Lord Peter Hain, a leading supporter of the People’s Vote campaign, said:
"Over the last 24 hours the reality of Brexit has collided with Boris Johnson's promises. The ball is now firmly in his court, but he has no idea what to do with it.
"For all his posturing about the backstop, we have heard nothing whatsoever from him about how he proposes to avoid a hard border on the island of Ireland, with all the risk and uncertainty that would bring for peace and for the future of the Union. One can only assume he doesn’t have any, and that he doesn’t care.
“The problem his Brexit enthusiasts have is that an open border requires the same customs and regulations on both sides and no number of technological wheezes or wishful thinking can resolve that.
"What is now clear is that Boris Johnson's plan to blame Europe for a No Deal Brexit is not going to wash. If we crash out of the EU on October 31 without a deal then the blame will be laid firmly at his door.
“He and the Leave campaigners he has installed in Downing Street are ready to inflict No Deal on the rest of us when they sold Brexit on the basis they’d get a “great deal”. The destructive Brexit they are now trying to force on our country is a million miles from what they promised in 2016, so it’s only fair and democratic that we are all given a say over whether to go ahead with it in a People’s Vote.”
