Details have been announced today of actors, writers, activists and Scottish campaigners who will speak at the rally for a People’s Vote in Edinburgh next Saturday (August 18).
Respected author and former BBC journalist and presenter Gavin Esler - who this week announced his support for the People’s Vote campaign - will join Scots actor Emma Currie on stage at Festival Square on August 18. The event will be compered by comedian and performer Mitch Benn.
They are expected to tell a capacity crowd that Brexit is a bad deal which is being dumped on the doorsteps of people across Scotland, but that people can take back control by demanding a People’s Vote on the final deal.
Also among the speakers announced today are NUS Scotland President Liam McCabe and Malcolm MacLeod, Professor of Neurology and Translational Neuroscience at the Centre for Clinical Brain Studies.
The event will also hear from Mary Ross Davie, Director of the Royal College of Midwives in Scotland, Steve Richards - Guardian columnist and host of Rock and Roll Politics and Professor Tanja Bueltmann, an EU citizen who campaigns for the rights of 3.7 million other EU citizens who have made the UK their home and millions more British citizens living abroad.
Writer and broadcaster Gavin Esler, who will be speaking at the rally, said:
“I have never supported a political party or campaign, but I know that when the facts change, rational people change their minds. The facts about Brexit have most certainly changed over the past two years and I’ve now changed my mind about that too. When once I quietly accepted a democratic vote to make Brexit happen, I don’t any more.
“That’s why I think it’s important to come back to Edinburgh on August 18 to join the hundreds of people across Scotland calling for a People’s Vote. Whether you voted leave or remain in the referendum, we all agree Brexit is too big a deal to leave to politicians in Westminster. That’s why we need a final say on the Brexit deal through a People’s Vote.”

About People’s Vote: The People's Vote campaign is supported by nine campaign groups seeking to ensure that the government's Brexit deal is put before the country in a public vote so that we can decide if a decision that will affect our lives for generations makes the country better or worse off. Good deal or bad deal, it's definitely a big deal - and that's why it should be put to a People's Vote.https://www.peoples-vote.uk/
