Just 24 hours since being launched, the People’s Vote campaign nationwide offensive, ‘Let Us Be Heard’, has received backing from one of England’s greatest footballers, a former Speaker of the House of Commons and thousands of members of the public.
The programme, featuring 15 events across the UK culminating in a huge march through Central London on October 12, went live at 6pm yesterday (Wednesday), and has already raised more than £50,000 in online donations averaging £23.95. These included support from people in every corner of every nation and region of the UK - Peterborough, Lincoln, Dundee, Belfast, Nottingham, Sheffield, Edinburgh, Brighton, Manchester, Milton Keynes, Burnley, Southampton, Derby, Newcastle, Halifax, Swindon, Guildford, Barrow-in-Furness, Mold, York and many more besides.
The ‘Let Us Be Heard’ campaign will kick off with a rally in Leeds on June 22.
Gary Lineker, England legend and prominent People’s Vote supporter, said:
“The Brexit crisis is escalating. Crunch time is approaching. So the People’s Vote campaign is launching an all-out nationwide offensive with rallies in 15 towns and cities in every corner of the country, starting in Leeds on 22 June and culminating in a massive, historic march in London on October 12.
“This campaign - ‘Let Us Be Heard’ – will show the strength, the scale and the sheer bloody-mindedness of our movement. We will not allow a destructive Brexit – deal or No Deal – to be forced on us.
“Barely a year after being created, our campaign has gone from the margins of political debate to one with a real chance of securing the British people the chance to be heard through a final say referendum. We are now entering the most intense and sustained period of campaigning activity we have ever undertaken.”
Betty Boothroyd, former Speaker of the House of Commons and leading supporter of the People’s Vote campaign, said:
“I thought my rallying days were over. But there are two simple reasons why I have joined the fight for a People’s Vote. My patriotism; and my love of the younger generation. It is their future that counts. It is their future all of us have a duty to secure.
“Already even before we have left Brexit is damaging our country, our economy, our society, our standing in the world. Damage when before that will be worsened by the kind of ruinous no deal being pledged by some who would wish to be Prime Minister.
“We are in a fight for the very future of our country. And it is a fight we have to win.”
