Gapes – Putin’s mockery shows how Brexit is becoming a national humiliation

Commenting on Vladimir Putin’s attack on Western societies and values, Mike Gapes MP, leading supporter of the People’s Vote campaign, said:

“Vladimir Putin, the man responsible for murder in Salisbury and war in Ukraine, now feels able to mock our democracy. This is the latest incarnation of our national humiliation and diminished status on the world that has been brought about by this tortured Brexit process.

“What hurts most, however, is that Putin is right to point out our future is being decided not by the people, but by the 0.25% of the population who are members of the Conservative Party.

“It is an outrage that a tiny minority of people have the right to decide our future in Europe and determine what happens to the livelihoods of millions of families.

“Both Boris Johnson and Jeremy Hunt say they’re willing to force a disastrous No Deal departure from the EU on the rest of us, even though it was scarcely mentioned in the last referendum.

“This is the kind of Brexit favoured by Nigel Farage whose narrow-minded politics are closely related to those of Putin.  Farage said that Putin was the world leader he most admired.  It’s time for all democrats to stand up to both, make their voice heard and demand a People’s Vote on Brexit.”
