The Home Office are expected to announce the scrapping of immigration limits for foreign, non-EU, doctors and nurses on Friday.
Commenting, Dr Paul Williams MP, leading supporter of the People’s Vote campaign, said:
“The Government’s climbdown on visas for doctors, nurses and skilled staff should just be the start.
“It’s time we dropped the arbitrary immigration target and instead had a sensible and serious debate about the benefits and necessity of immigration and about how we can address the social dislocation and stresses it has caused in some communities.
“But what is really damaging the NHS today is the loss of staff from other EU member countries ahead of Brexit. That is one of the reasons why the Royal College of Midwives has today joined the demand for a People’s Vote on the final Brexit deal.
“If Brexit threatens the future of the NHS, no amount of tinkering with the immigration rules will be enough.”
