The Irish Government have today stepped up preparations for a ‘no deal’ Brexit, and a hard border on the island of Ireland, ordering the recruitment of hundreds more customs officers. They have also made it clear that they will not contemplate negotiations on the basis of the Brextremist ERG positions passed in the House of Commons this week.
Commenting, Stephen Doughty MP, leading supporter of the People’s Vote campaign, said:
“The Irish Government have made it crystal clear today that Theresa May has to make a choice between negotiating seriously and being dictated to by Jacob Rees-Mogg.
“If she picks the former then her Government’s chaotic Brexit roadshow might be able to stagger on for a few more weeks. If she picks the latter then she is opting for a catastrophic no deal Brexit, a rock-hard Irish border and the destruction of jobs all over the UK.
“Ministers need to face the truth: the only way out of this chaotic Westminster gridlock is a People’s Vote on the final Brexit deal.”
