Responding to the Prime Minister’s Statement in the House of Commons, Stephen Doughty MP, leading supporter of People’s Vote, said:
“Theresa May’s statement shows more than ever that there is no plan, no time and no Parliamentary majority for any Brexit deal. Now, with the clock ticking ever louder, it is imperative that MPs exhaust those Brexit options as soon as possible so that they can then move on to finding a real way forward: a People’s Vote.
“Despite two years of failed negotiations, nothing has changed. The Government has now wasted millions and risked peace and prosperity, all while failing to listen to MPs. It is simply too little, too late, for the Prime Minister to announce suddenly she wants a bigger role for the devolved administrations, trade unions and regional representatives. The Prime Minister has shown she is unwilling or unable to build a consensus with other parties - and there is no reason to believe this can change now.
“Waiving the fee for EU nationals is clearly welcome, but we should never have been in this position in the first place. What is needed is for Parliament to demonstrate there is a clear majority against a no deal Brexit and then make an honest assessment of alternatives to the Government’s proposed deal. There is no form of Brexit that can fulfil the promises made in 2016, that is better than the deal we’ve got inside Europe or will prevent this crisis going on forever. When those options are removed, the only way forward is to give the public the final say.”
