Doughty – Freight Transport Association statement slamming Government on Brexit is “jaw-dropping”

The Freight Transport Association (FTA) has put out a statement slamming the Government’s handling of the Brexit negotiations and describing “Brexit Britain” as “on the road to nowhere”.

The statement includes comments by James Hookham, the organisation’s Deputy Chief Executive, who says that: “The industry’s frustration with the lack of progress is building daily. Logistics businesses simply cannot answer their customers’ questions about how they will move goods after Brexit.  Manufacturers and retailers are losing faith and fear that post-Brexit Britain is at real risk of becoming nothing more than a series of road blocks at our ports and airports.”

Commenting, Stephen Doughty MP, leading supporter of the People’s Vote campaign, said:

“This jaw-dropping statement from one of the UK’s largest industry groups should serve as a serious wake-up call to the Government. But ministers will most likely do what they always do – ignore the warnings from business about their shambolic management of Brexit and plough on regardless.

“The Freight Transport Association are absolutely right that the only way to preserve frictionless trade, maintain integrated supply chains and protect jobs is for the UK to stay in the Single Market and the Customs Union. Anything less could see chaos at our ports and on our motorways and major disruption to food and medicine supplies.

“With business patience reaching breaking point, and the reality of this Government’s Brexit coming into view, we need a People’s Vote on the final Brexit deal.”
