Responding to Boris Johnson’s claims that the UK can avoid tariffs under a No Deal departure, Stephen Doughty MP, leading supporter of the People’s Vote campaign said:
“Boris Johnson’s fantastical accounts of Brexit have once again highlighted how the frontrunner to become Prime Minister, doesn’t even understand how this is meant to work.
“His claim that the UK can avoid tariffs under a No Deal departure have already been dismissed by the Governor of the Bank of England. Now his notion that he could continue fiddling with the Withdrawal Agreement while negotiating a free trade agreement – despite having left on October 31 with no deal - is being laughed out of court by his Cabinet colleagues.
“Perhaps he knows this is all rubbish designed to con the Conservative membership, the 0.25 per cent of the British population who will pick our new Prime Minister. Perhaps there are serious gaps in his knowledge.
“Either way it would be embarrassing if it was not so dangerous. Forcing a destructive Brexit on the people without giving us a final say would be fundamentally undemocratic. It is why now, more than ever we need the people’s voice to be heard.”
