Today’s by-election result in Lewisham East shows a clear ‘Brexit effect’, with Labour losing votes since the 2017 General Election and the Conservatives crashing to third place behind the Liberal Democrats.
Commenting, Stephen Dorrell, the former Conservative Cabinet minister and a leading supporter of the People’s Vote campaign, said:
“The Brexit effect is starting to bite. The Lewisham by-election result shows how the weakness and vacillation of both front benches is undermining electoral support for both Labour and the Conservatives as it becomes increasingly clear that the emerging Brexit deal would sell Britain down the river.
“I congratulate the Labour candidate, but she now faces the same challenge as all other Labour and Conservative MPs; they must find the courage to call out a bad deal. What is emerging from the Brexit process is so far removed from what was promised that it is simply dishonest for either front bench to claim they have a mandate; only a People's Vote on what is actually proposed can provide that".
