The Prime Minister, Theresa May, is trying to present the choice on Brexit as between her proposal or no deal. This follows on from Michael Gove strongly implying yesterday that the Chequers proposals can be changed after March 2019, when the UK is due to leave the EU.
Commenting, Stella Creasy MP, leading supporter of the People’s Vote campaign, said:
“Theresa May’s Chequers car crash proposal for Brexit has split her Cabinet and found little favour with the public, whether they voted Leave or Remain. Now she’s trying to force the country into a false choice between two disastrous options – her proposal for a bad deal or no deal. The presentation of this pathetic choice to the country will ensure that demands for a People’s Vote only get louder.
“The Government’s failures in the Brexit negotiations are driving us headlong towards a blindfold Brexit, where we leave the EU with no idea about where we’re going. Brexiters like Michael Gove are happy to go along with it now because, as he admitted at the weekend, they think it will allow them to re-write the deal after March 2019.
“A blindfold Brexit is being talked about as a face-saving deal for the Government, who are now terrified that their failures over the past two years will result in a humiliating no deal Brexit. Theresa May and her Government are desperate for a deal – any deal at all – to save face. And the Brextremists will be waiting in the wings to pounce if we leave on such vague terms. Our country’s national interest, hundreds of thousands of jobs, as well as the future of young people and vital public services are at stake.
“If it’s a Brexit-at-any-cost like that favoured by Jacob Rees-Mogg and Boris Johnson, a Theresa May deal where we still obey EU rules but have no say in how they’re made, or Michael Gove’s blindfold Brexit where we don’t know the real costs until after we’ve left, it is still ordinary people who will pay the price for the disaster that leaving the EU is becoming. That is why citizens from all walks of life, from every region and nation of our country, are demanding a People’s Vote on any ‘deal’ that emerges from the negotiations.”
